Utterly bombproof
March 14, 2009
I once described Martin during a press conference as “utterly bombproof in a polar environment”, a remark that I stand by to this day. Not only does he capture the very essence of the moment in his images, be it action, emotion or event, he does so in the most inhospitable of conditions. Where others fade and head to warmer climates, Martin comes to the fore, delivering awe-inspiring images despite the bitter cold and cutting winds.

Operating in such debilitating conditions comes at a price, however, and Martin more than any of us is at risk of sustaining cold injuries, such as frostbite, unless he is very, very careful. Fortunately for all of us, he’s spent nineteen previous polar assignments honing his skills. As such, he’s now developed a finely tuned sense of judgement, knowing when to take the shot, and when to focus on basic survival. The result? High quality images of a rarely seen part of the world, and a polar photographer who still has all of his fingers.
