CNN make it to Catlin Ice Base

March 29, 2011

The DC-3 plane was finally able to leave the confines of the Kenn Borek Air hangar in Resolute and make its way to the Catlin Ice Base.  On board was a CNN news crew, polar guide John Huston and fuel and other supplies for the Ice Base.

After a 90 minute flight the plane touched down on the ‘runway’ at the base. The in-bound passengers were replaced with photographer Martin Hartley, Times journalist Frank Pope, Field Operations Manager Ian Wesley and the 4 members of the Explorer Team.  After emotional farewells the flight took off on its return leg and arrived safely back at Resolute at 22.25 BST. Shortly afterwards all were enjoying hot baths back at South Camp Inn.

The Explorers now have 48 hours (weather permitting) before they fly up to the North Geographic Pole to start Phase 2 of the expedition.
