Corals and Shellfish

Recent research suggests the most serious effects of ocean acidification may be on corals and shellfish larvae rather than adults. Arctic Council Report

Arctic sea ice is melting faster than was anticipated just five years ago, according to the Arctic Council’s latest assessment report. The pan-government body called for more research into the causes and potential impacts of this rapid change, including emerging theories investigated by the 2011 Catlin Arctic Survey.

The Arctic Spring Bloom

It’s exciting to be here at the change from winter to spring. For the past few days, the temperature at the Ice Base has been much warmer at -25C. It’s made living on the sea ice much more pleasant, and the plankton world is feeling the coming of spring too.

Ice-free Ice Holes

Ice sampling holes need constant maintenance and the first task each morning is to chip away the ice forming round the edges and sieve away the slushy ice skin that has formed overnight.

Oliver’s Arctic Algae Farm
